Over the past several years I slowly, and then somewhat more quickly towards the end, fell out of love with Portland. I couldn't tolerate the long commute to work, the increasing rudeness of people as the resources in the area became more competitive and began to dwindle, having to live with a roommate to afford the ever increasing and ridiculous rent...the spots that I came to love becoming more and more littered and populated. I was offered an opportunity to try living on the coast and I excitedly jumped at the chance to say goodbye to a non-weird and hipster-conforming PDX for quirky and colorful Astoria. Portland is dead y'all. I'm sorry, but it is over. You missed it. Done.
My new spot has allowed me to experience some new outdoorsy hobbies that I will share with you, along with any fun towny stuff I encounter along the way. I have been amazed at the hardiness and toughness of my new neighbors...and you have to be a bit gritty and less granola-y here if you're gonna make it. After 13 years in PDX I thought I was outfitted with all of the gear I would need for PNW downpours. But, when it rains on the coast, it legit tsunamis. Also, crank up that Vit D because 10,000 ius ain't gonna cut it no more homie.
And Tupelo is beside herself with joy. She gets to spend at least 2 1/2 more hours with me every day and loves the smell of fish.
Dueces Portland. It was fun, until it wasn't.
